5 Tips to Refresh Your Closet

Women holding up clothes and title

I don’t know about you but I get bored very easily with my clothes and outfits. In the past this meant going to the shops almost every weekend to buy something new for that week only to forget about it soon after the excitement of a new purchase ebbed away. Back then I didn’t know better but after years of experience as a style coach I have some tricks up my sleeve which I would like to share with you to avoid making the same mistakes I did and more importantly to get you excited over and over again with the contents of your wardrobe without actually hitting the shops every time. My 5 tips will not only help you maximise your wardrobe and save you lots of money but will also help reduce unnecessary damage to the environment. Sounds good?!

1. Re-shuffle your clothes

During a wardrobe edit I usually organise clients’ wardrobes according to colour and form (dresses together, trousers together etc.) I do this so that they get a clear idea of what they already own and more importantly what’s missing. After a few months of them getting re-acquainted with the contents of their wardrobe it’s time to have some fun so then I ask them to reshuffle everything because you never know which things might end up together right? Half of the outfits I come up with are actually coincidental. The other half is because I know my wardrobe inside and out and have clear ideas of exactly what I need when I actually do go shopping.

2. Layer it up

Forget putting away your summer clothes when autumn approaches. Your wardrobe should work for you all year round or at least most of it. Only put away summer linens, lightweight dresses and shorts ahead of winter and the thick wintry knits and coats when summer approaches. Layering your summer t-shirts, crop tops, and flowy shirt dresses with a sweater, hoody or a blazer will give you a completely new look while still keeping you nice and cosy.

2. Have fun with your accessories

Accessories play a key role in any closet, something that a lot of people tend to overlook but they are what actually makes or breaks an outfit, after fit of course. If you tend to wear the same black bag with all your outfits, try a different colour this time or tie a scarf around your trusty black bag to give it a new life. When laying out your outfits start with one statement accessory first, be it earrings, shoes, belt…and work your way from there rather than trying to find the right accessory to your outfit. You’d be surprised with how many new outfits you can come up with this way.

4. Observe other people

Whether its someone who’s style you admire at work or someone famous in a magazine  – observe their style, keep a pinterest board with outfits that inspire you. Do you like the way they tuck their shirt or the way the way they combine hoodies with smart blazers? Look at what they come up on the different occasions and try to replicate their look with what you have in your wardrobe.

5. Get creative

Do not let budget restrictions stop you from upping up your style game. Get creative! Dye your faded t-shirts, shorten last season’s pants to a new crop length, add iron on patches to a old sweater, add sequins to your blazer…You are the queen of your own style – you make the rules. Just have fun with it!
